Program Description

Early childcare assistants (ECA) plan and arrange activities for preschool and school-age children. Early childhood educators and assistants lead children in activities to encourage and develop their academic, physical and mental/psychological growth. Our unique diploma program especially focuses on health and safety, children’s infancy, toddler and preschool development, interactive and two-way communications, child mental development and guidance, developing educational theories, designing age-reflective curriculum, and program management while working with families where needed.

This program combines hands-on learning with foundation knowledge in the dynamic field of early childhood education. Students explore strategies for fostering inclusive classrooms, promoting creativity through play, and addressing children’s diverse needs. Emphasis is placed on understanding developmental milestones and tailoring educational approaches accordingly. By the end of the program, graduates will be equipped to make a meaningful difference in children’s lives, shaping their academic and emotional growth with confidence and care.

Admission Requirements

Applicants to the Early Childcare Assistant (ECA) diploma program must have a Grade 12 level or a university degree or a college diploma and demonstrated competency in English.

Clinical Practice

After students finish in-class training for the Early Childhood Assistant program in Ontario, students will have an opportunity to complete a minimum of 8 weeks of full-time ECA practicum placement in a licensed day care centre.

In Ontario, employment prospects are expected to be on the rise for early childhood assistants (ECA) – a relatively large childcare occupation grouping with a good future outlook all over Canada. Employment in the early childhood education and care occupation has been growing progressively over the last few years. These childcare professionals are fairly young, with an average age group between 25 and 45 years. After completion of the Early Childcare Assistant diploma program, early childhood assistants can easily work in child-care centres, kindergartens and nursery schools, agencies for exceptional children, and other environments where early childhood education (ECE) services are provided, or they may even be self-employed at their own pace, licensed as a home-based childcare facility in Ontario.
